On The

Home Front

During the time he was in Europe, John's wife Joelmae and all the extended family left behind tried to follow as best they could the news of where he and the other soldiers in the family were fighting. Jo remembers following along with John's outfit on the map only to learn that she had been mislead along with the Germans. When the "Mystery Division" was revealed as the 12th Armored, she knew that John was much further into Germany than they had thought, and it was obvious that he had been a part of some of truly tough fighting.

The Home Front was crucial to the war efforts. Rationing had become a way of life for all Americans, as precious resources were directed to the fighting fronts. In many ways, it was the superior resources available to the Allies, along with their own integrity and ingenuity, that helped win the war.
